How do Hard Disk Drives Store Data?

The anatomy of a hard disk drive (HDD) is a fascinating interplay of precision engineering and technological innovation. At its core, the HDD consists of several key components working in harmony to store and retrieve data. The spinning platters, typically made of glass or aluminium, serve as the canvases where data is magnetically encoded. Hovering just above these platters is the read/write head, delicately suspended on an actuator arm. This head zips across the spinning surface with incredible speed and precision, interpreting the magnetic signals to read or write data. The entire assembly is sealed within a sturdy casing to protect it from external contaminants.

Data Loss in Hard Disk Drives can be Mechanical, Electrical or Logical in Nature:

Mechanical Failure results when the Physical components, such as motors, heads or platters, get damaged. This can happen due to accidental impact or due to aging from continual use. Some of the symptoms include clicking, scratching or grinding noises, with the drives failing to initialise.
